Dear friends and family,

I recently put in my two weeks notice at my job. It was a fantastic job. An amazing company. I learned so much about marketing, business, sales, design, and eCommerce by working at this fintech company.

But it was not what I was called to do.

And, while I feel somewhat pathetic for saying this, my life hasn’t been easy. After the police removed me from my father’s home at age 9, I had been swept into such an adult life, and when I turned 18, I threw myself into my career and found myself running into more and more traumatic situations that seemed to compound, escalating in my father’s overdose 7 years ago.

I need to rest. For seven years out of the past 10 years, I have been working at least 3 jobs (including freelance) alongside finishing advanced terminal degrees in the academy. I crushed everything. It was great. I was the youngest person to publish a full-length article in the Westminster Theological Journal, and had two full-length pieces published in the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society before I matriculated into my Ph.D. program, which I finished 1.5 years faster than the average university student.

After that, I ran into some well-meaning people and some predatory people. I was kicked in the gut a few times, had to press reset a few times, and certainly messed everything up with my own nonsense more times than I’d like to admit.

But here’s the double-bind I’m in: I need a break, and also … I know I am called to build something very meaningful.

What’s ahead of me will combine everything I’ve learned — programming languages, biblical languages, marketing strategy, growth hacking, a deep appreciation for the power of SEO, and a variety of other tools I’ve acquired while earning over $100M in value for companies ranging from the Big 4 publishing houses, to the NFL and NBA, to California financial technology companies.

Why do I say all of this? Because I’m scared of what you think. I’m scared you think I’m lazy and undeserving. And that’s your prerogative, and if that is your interpretation of this, then I appreciate you caring enough even to read this far.

But that’s my box. And as strong as I try to be, I can’t punch my way out of this one.

If you have ever enjoyed my writing, videos, content, or encouragement of any other kind — or if you believe in what I’m building — I would cherish your monthly support.

With affection for all of good will,

Paul Maxwell
