Most of the Q&A I receive is related to fitness. I get it. But I also don’t. For two reasons.
First, I’ve gotta little bit of the ‘ole body dysmorphia, so I sometimes wonder why people want to know what I know. I think, “I’m not that fit. Google would be a great alternative to asking me.”
Second, I actually don’t know that much. Like all my knowledge, I’ve acquired what I need to know in order to achieve the results I desire. So, my knowledge feels impractical for many. However, I don’t think it is. The principles of fitness are fairly universal. Personal histories, goals, and medical conditions are what make fitness complicated. But how it works is basic.
Core to health and fitness is lifestyle preference. What do you want? And … do you really want it?
For me, I cannot accept being below a certain fitness level. So, if I go through a rough season and miss the gym for a few months (that’s only happened 2-3 times in my life), then a bell goes off in my head, and I think: “No. This is not happening.”
Not everyone has that bell. That bell doesn’t come from discipline. It doesn’t come from a certain fitness philosophy. It comes from your childhood. It comes from your relationships. Your friendships. Your culture. You don’t need that bell. You don’t even need fitness.
Fitness is just something that I love and, while I’ve certainly had a toxic relationship with fitness throughout my life, it still brings me a lot of joy and confidence, and I’ve been doing work in therapy for years to build a positive relationship with this practice and the preferences that bring me to it.
